For the next three Thursdays, we will be focusing our daily prayer on the region of Extremadura.
Sometimes called Spain’s “forgotten land,” Extremadura is historically poor and sparsely populated (just over 1 million people). It was the birthplace of famous conquistadors like Cortés and Pizarro. Notably, Casiodoro de Reina and Cipriano de Valera – the first translators of the complete Spanish Bible (Reina-Valera) – came from Extremadura, showing a seed of Protestant legacy. For years, Extremadura had almost no evangelical witness; as recently as the 1980s, one could count the number of churches on one hand. But God has been at work: by 1997 there were 47 churches, and a revival among the Gypsy community has since doubled the number of believers.
Praise the Lord for the growth in the last two decades. From virtually no evangelical presence to dozens of churches – this is a remarkable change. Pray that this momentum continues. Give thanks for missions like OM and the Baptist Union that invested in Extremadura, and for local believers who persevered.
